By 2050, we'll have replaced all the fish in the ocean with plastic. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch spans 1.6 million square kilometres and is three times the size of France. Approximately 100 million sea creautures perish each year due to plastic debris. These cyanotype images mimimcking marine life are created out of plastic and other garbage found on the beaches in Chennai during an educational trip. The images call for an immediate reflection on the lifestyle choices we make while there's still time.
Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan blue print. It was a low cost process used by engineers of the 20th century to make copies of drawings, then known as blueprints. the process uses two chemicals which are ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. The solution is then spread on a photo sensitive paper and left to dry, all done in a dark room. An object/ photo is then placed on the paper and is left under the sun due to which there will be an impression of the object/photo on the paper. It is then washed to remove excessive color.
